Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto, in Red
A week in Kyoto during autumn — torii gates, temple gardens, and the specific quiet of a city that wants you to listen.
Fushimi Inari at 5:50 a.m., before the staircases fill, is one of the few places I’ve been where the silence is loud — wood, stone, breath, and the red of ten thousand gates that has somehow never stopped feeling extraordinary.
A week that worked
- Three days in central Kyoto for the temples on foot — Kiyomizu-dera, Nanzen-ji, Ginkaku-ji along the Philosopher’s Path.
- Two days for outliers — Arashiyama early, Fushimi Inari at dawn, Daitoku-ji’s quieter sub-temples in the afternoon.
- Two days of nothing — sitting in coffee places in Gion, eating set lunches, taking the wrong train on purpose.
What I’d skip
The illuminations at the popular temples in November are crushed. If you must, pick the lesser-known one your hotel recommends. Or just go to the same temple at 6 a.m. instead. Trust me.
